"Paris, International Expats: Connected, But To What?"

Migration and Media In A Global Age

Perspectives And Practices Of International
Expatriates

Interactive
.

Let's have a look at how international expatriates and global nomads use media, global connectedness of information and media technologies to link to create communities, compared with other different migrant groups.

Erika Polson, is a doctoral candidate in international communications at Pennsylvania State University. She will discuss connections between national-identity, personal identity, and media for migrating peoples. Much has been written about specific national or ethnic groups in migration, but there is much to be understood about the perspectives and practices of international expatriates.

As a 24 year expat (next week is my 24th anniversary), I'm fascinated by this subject. Hope to see you on Sunday. - Patricia

Patricia writes on being an Expat:

"... As the years went by, I also realized that the feeling of being foreign and other, transcends even race. You are not a part of their (French) culture. It doesn't matter who you are or of what origin you are. You're either French (in your head and behavior), or not. When I began to see that, I began to identify myself as an expat. The sum of being an American who lives in Paris, an African-American trying to find roots here, minus not being French - but seeing life internationally - on a large scale and permanently, equals my personal experience of being an expat."
